Inlays and Outlays are partial crowns that can be used when a full crown is not necessary. They are cosmetic and conservative restorations, they are bigger than a filling but smaller than a crown, so they conserve tooth structure which is healthier for the tooth. Inlays and onlays can be made of porcelain, gold or composite resin. At AGN dental we typically use porcelain, or lithium disilicate materials made using CEREC computer technology.
Inlays and onlays are usually done in one visit using CEREC technology, avoiding the need for dental impressions, a second visit with more novicaine and temporaries. During the first visit, the existing filling is removed and the tooth is cleaned and prepared.
You should consider getting an inlay or onlay instead of a regular filling because,
- Inlays and onlays strengthen your teeth
- They last can 10-30 years, depending on home care!
- Fillings typically reduce the strength of a natural tooth
